Operating Division : Transnet Freight Rail Position Title : Trainee Train Control Officer Employee Group : Permanent Department : CL-OPS-EXEC-TCO-Team B-NSE Location : Nsese Reporting To : Co-ordinator (CTC) Grade Level : TFR8JU Reference Number : 50008602 Position Purpose : To control trains over double lines/section by means of electronic equipment or semaphore signalling to ensure a safe, fast and predictable train service. 

Position outputs : Supervise and conduct performance assessments for all directly assigned personnel to ensure proper management of the human capital and availability of the required competences to meet safety and operational requirements . 

Responsible for the authorisation and control of the running /movement of trains within a section to ensure safe running of trains according to the train service plan and customer service plan.

to control the movement of trains and shunting under normal or abnormal conditions over a specific designated section of lines or stations by means of the applicable train control methods and in accordance with procedures and requirements of the train service plan in order to ensure a safe and efficient train service. 

Monitor all train movements and any occupation / objects on the track within the allocated section to ensure that trains run safely and according to the train plan whilst adhering to the train working rules. 

Co-ordinate and monitor occupations on infra structure authorised for the execution of the infra maintenance plan or clearance of the derailments to ensure that there is a balance between the implementation of the train service plan and the infra maintenance plan. 

Responsible for the application of train working rules and safety standards during the implementation of the train service plan and incidents/accidents situations on the infrastructure, thus ensuring a safe working environment for the Transnet Freight Rail employees, assets and the community. 

Qualifications & Experience : •Grade 12 with Maths •4 years working experience within trains operations. •Passed Train Operating Diploma (all modules required for the operating methods) or be prepared to attend and pass the first available course 

Competencies : •Thorough understanding of shunting procedures. •Passed airbrake/vacuum system. •Understanding of geographical layout of all sections, yard and siding layout within his/her control. •Knowledge of wagon & locomotive types, on track machines, freight tables and hauling capacity & constraints of his/her section. •Rules, the General Appendix and the prescriptions of the Local Appendix/instructions pertaining to the section under his/her control. •Understanding of load (abnormal & sensitive) composition principles. •Thorough knowledge of switching diagrams of section/s. •Thorough knowledge of Health & Safety Act (NOSA , Act 85 & 16) •Have an understanding of Integrated Train Plan/service. •Certified competent to operate work and operate on designated panels/section. •Passed the ACDC change over yards/power switching course •Must be licensed under the provision of the Rail Regulator Act. •Computer literate- MS Office, RIMAS, ETA & ETD, IOMS, GPS and SPRINT. •First Aid •Hazmat •Telephone Etiquette •Communication (writing & verbal) •Predictable service (O2E) principles •Team work •Time management •Problem solving •Tolerance •Willing to work shifts •Understanding of the safety standards and protective wear
